Many families use food wrap primarily for watermelon; however, a large watermelon won't fit in the refrigerator whole. So what to do? Most people cut the watermelon in half, wrap it with food wrap, and then put it in the refrigerator.

  But is this the right way? A recent news story claimed that "watermelon covered with plastic wrap has 10 times more bacteria." Is this news credible? They even claim to have conducted experiments. Regardless of the experiments, we know from our own experience that refrigerators contain various foods, including vegetables, meat, etc. Even if the bacteria increase tenfold with the wrap, leaving the watermelon exposed in the refrigerator mixed with other foods will lead to even more bacteria and faster spoilage.

  So, can we use plastic wrap for leftover watermelon? We recommend that food wrap can be used. There are three types of plastic wrap on the market: polyethylene (PE), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The first two are safe, while the safety of PVC wrap is questionable and its use is not recommended.

  Even with food wrap, to ensure both taste and health, leftover watermelon should be consumed within 4 hours.
