The function of cling film is to retain the moisture of fruits and vegetables, but temperature is the important condition for preservation; without a suitable temperature environment, the ideal preservation effect cannot be achieved, so the best preservation temperature is around 10 degrees Celsius. If cling film is used to store food at room temperature, it will not only fail to preserve freshness, but will accelerate food decay and spoilage. If you buy unqualified cling film, which is not a disinfected edible plastic film, the harm is even greater. Covering food with it will cause contamination and food poisoning.
Cling film is made of polyvinyl chloride, and in order to increase its adhesion, it contains a component called DEHA. It will seep into food, especially high-fat foods, causing harm to the human body. Therefore, try to use as little cling film as possible to preserve meat. After buying meat from the supermarket, it should be immediately removed from the plastic packaging such as cling film and placed in other containers. If the food is in a bowl, the plastic covering should preferably not touch the food. If this is not possible, the layer contacting the surface of the cling film should be removed before consumption. For example, after taking out watermelon covered with cling film from the refrigerator, a layer should be cut off before eating it.
If the packaging of the cling film indicates that it is made of PVC, it means that it is made of polyvinyl chloride material, so food wrapped in it cannot be heated in a microwave oven. At high temperatures, some substances in the PVC cling film will be released and absorbed by food, which is detrimental to our health. When long-term heating is needed in the microwave oven, a cling film with high heat resistance should be selected, such as one made of polyethylene with polyvinylidene chloride carrier.
Do not cover hot dishes with cling film. After vegetables are heated, immediately covering them with cling film will not only fail to preserve freshness but will also increase the loss of vitamin C. For example, freshly stir-fried cabbage contains 100 mg of vitamin C, but the content will drop to 86 mg after being covered with cling film, and other vegetables show similar results. Therefore, freshly cooked vegetables should not be covered with cling film; they should be allowed to cool completely before covering with cling film to protect vitamin C.
